I’m Ebony, a qualified social worker with nearly a decade of experience across sexual violence, family violence, mental health, suicide prevention, advocacy, case management, and multidisciplinary support.
My work has been shaped by personal ongoing supervision, professional learning, and experience supporting people within emotionally demanding support roles, particularly in areas relating to burnout, boundaries, emotional wellbeing, grief and loss, professional responsibility, and the long-term impact of continually supporting others.
Over the years, I've seen how emotionally demanding support work can become. Not just because of the work itself, but because of the responsibility people carry within it. The pressure to remain regulated, capable, ethical, available, and endlessly functioning no matter what is happening underneath the surface.
Life is messy. Humans are messy. Helping work is messy.
I created The Messy Human because I wanted a space for honesty. A place where professionals could speak openly about the impact of their work without everything becoming clinical, performative, or reduced to another conversation about resilience and self-care.

THE PRINCIPLES THAT SHAPE OUR WORK
Sustainable Practice
We believe meaningful work should be sustainable. Our approach supports professionals to build careers and lives that can be maintained over the long term, without relying on chronic self sacrifice, exhaustion, or survival mode.
Ethical Responsibility
We encourage compassionate and accountable practice grounded in clear professional boundaries. Caring deeply for others is important, but so is recognising personal limits, scope, capacity, and responsibility to self.
Compassionate Self Leadership
We support professionals to extend the same compassion toward themselves that they routinely offer others. We believe wellbeing, rest, and self care are essential components of effective and ethical practice.
Grounded Humanity
We believe support can be both professionally sound and deeply human. Our work is grounded in evidence, ethics, and structure, while creating space for authenticity, connection, humour, and the realities of being human.
Prevention & Recovery
We believe support should be available before burnout reaches crisis point. Alongside recovery, we focus on early recognition, reflection, sustainable strategies, and long term wellbeing.
Recognition of Emotional Labour
Support work carries significant emotional, cognitive, and relational demands. We acknowledge and honour this often invisible labour, creating space for it to be recognised, understood, and explored.
